Medical Services

1. Internal Medicine
Strong basic internal medicine skills are a minimum requirement for any veterinarian employed at North Mecklenburg Animal Hospital. Internal medicine is one of the core strengths of our clinic and therefore, if your beloved pet is ill in any way, we are confident that we can help. Our veterinarians are skilled, experienced and compassionate and they have almost every diagnostic tool available to help them diagnose the exact cause of your pet’s problem. Once the cause is known, treatment can be instituted using the most up to date medical knowledge available.
2. Emergency and Critical care
For many years our clinic was one of the few local clinics that did 24 hour emergency and critical care work. Skills, training, depth of experience and teamwork  are all critical for a successful outcome under these circumstances. We feel confident that we can provide these when they are required by our patients.
3. Pharmacy
We maintain a full in-house pharmacy to provide veterinary medications to our patients without delay. We also maintain relationships with local area human pharmacies and compounding pharmacies should human or compounded medications be required.

4.Oncology
The pets that visit our clinic are regarded as family members and they are very well cared for. Superior nutrition, healthy exercise, fewer parasites, loads of love and excellent medical care means that they are living longer and longer. With longer lives and modern technology we unfortunately are diagnosing cancer in our patients more than we used to. Cancer treatments often involve more than one type of treatment such as surgery, followed by chemotherapy, or surgery followed by radiation.

We are able to diagnose and treat many different types of cancer at our clinic and we will help you decide what the best options are for you AND your pet.

A good referral base of local oncologists and facilities enable us to guide you through a wide variety of treatment options that are designed to extend and enhance your beloved pet’s quality of life.

   6.  Acupuncture                                            acupuncture4

Concept

Acupuncture is the ancient Chinese medical technique of stimulating physiologic processes in the body through very tiny needles in the skin. Often it is mistaken that the needles work by stimulating vague energy pathways, or meridians. In fact, acupuncture points targeted on the surface of the body communicate with the rest of the body through association with blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. Stimulating these specific points modulates inflammation, blood flow, and nerves in a predictable manner.

Uses

In people, acupuncture is used for a variety of purposes, including pain relief, increased organ function, and general wellness. In animals, acupuncture can be used for many similar conditions. The most widely used and studied use of acupuncture for animals is pain relief, especially for arthritis or neck and back pain. It is also used to improve organ and nervous system function.

Acupuncture is often used when conventional therapies are not possible, not working well enough, or creating side effects. However, acupuncture should be considered a great compliment to any treatment program and can enhance wellness in almost any animal.

Side Effects

The negative side effects of acupuncture are negligible. Some animals may experience soreness or fatigue for 12-48 hours after a treatment. Because acupuncture promotes homeostasis, or regularity within the body, there are virtually no conditions that will worsen with treatment. This is in contrast to most conventional medications, which usually treat only one symptom and can often lead to adverse side effects.

Scheduling an Appointment

The veterinarians at North Mecklenburg Animal Hospital may recommend acupuncture for your pet in conjunction with other treatments or wellness exams. For most treatments, you will need to schedule an appointment with our Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist for a full Diagnostic Acupuncture Exam followed by the first acupuncture treatment. The number of needles used for each treatment varies depending on the treatment goals and the individual animal. You are welcome but not required to stay with your pet during treatment.

If your pet is a patient in another animal hospital, we would be happy to offer acupuncture for your pet on a referral basis from your regular veterinarian. We will best serve your pet once your veterinarian has performed sufficient diagnostic tests to properly target your pet’s health problems. The Veterinary Acupuncturist will be happy to review your pet’s medical records and design a treatment program accordingly.
